To do lists

WISE GUY TIP OF THE DAY:  Limit TODAY's to-do list to 10 items that you know that you can complete.

Make sure you begin with the tasks in order of how you will complete them during the day.  For example, if you have a task that is after lunch, don't put it first.  Don't make it harder for you to complete your tasks by making it more confusing!

Here are some additional helpful hints:

1) If it is too big a task, break it down and make each part one of your 10 items
2) Only add things after you finish the complete 10
3) Additional items (if not emergencies) can be added to TOMORROWS list
4) Emergencies STOP everything, get done, and then the list continues
5) Celebrate when you finish the list - if there is still time left in the day, start a new list

These tips will help you:

1) Not become overwhelmed
2) Set realistic goals for yourself
3) Give you a sense of accomplishment every day

HAVE A GREAT DAY!

Realization - get off the grid (atleast at night)

So last night about 1 am, after I had tweeted, facebooked, and texted a few friends about how I couldn't sleep, I began to think about why I was depriving myself of charging my body for the next day's work!

Around 9 p.m. I usually get sleepy but then The Big Bang Theory comes on at 9:30 and then I have to watch that.  As I'm watching, I have the computer next to me so I can do last minute posting, emails.  Then I check an online game site that I like and wouldn't you know it - there is a new game i've never played.  Suddenly its midnight!  Time to sleep.

I go up and lay in bed and start to decompress -or so I think.  Actually all the thoughts I have turn into ideas and for fear of forgetting them, I get back up again and write them down which then turns into "well I might as well email XYZ about my idea or write a proposal for it".  Now it is 2 am.

Tossing and turning, I finally turn on a sleep ap on my phone but I have to put it on the other side of the bed so I don't reach for it. . . . .

This is like EVERY NIGHT!

I thought I loved working at night because there were NO distractions but now that I'm looking at it, my nights are made up of distractions.

I'm going to try to institute a NO electronics after 10.  If I want to use my sleep ap, it has to be before 10 so then I can start waking up earlier.  I'll let you know how it goes.

ps.  I'm having my computer worked on this week while I'm on vacation so I won't be using it all week.  I know I can do it!

Get organized!

I have a LOT going on right now in my life:

- Completing the last 1/2 of my first semester as a Doctoral Student
- Just competed in two dance competitions in one weekend with multiple students
- Closing early on a house (my first one!)
- Managing new interns at the studio
and the list goes on . .  .

I have to have lists.  I have an app on my phone to help me with this!  It even sends reminders.

Wise Guy Thought for the day:

DON"T TRY TO KEEP IT ALL IN YOUR HEAD!

You have to be organized - even obsessive over the organization when times get stressful.  Some say its a form of procrastination but I believe it helps you to do the following:

- stay on top of things
- put your "stressed" feelings somewhere else so you can focus on what is important

Wise Guy Question for the day:

How do you stay organized?  Do you journal?  Do you make lists?

Wise Guy Action for the day:

Start today!  Make lists . . check them twice . . . Santa really had something going!

My First POST!

Hello,

Today is my first post to THE WISE GUY.

This blog is going to be about simple thoughts of logic and reason that will hopefully draw towards some area of your life that you can apply to - all to make you realize how much you really do know and how far you really can go!

Today's thought:

Be a good listener.
You might still have the best solution to the problem at hand, but if you listen really well, you will help yourself in solving the details to the problem which might save you time in the long run.

See you tomorrow.
The Wise Guy
